If you've seen “Jell-O skin” popping up on TikTok lately, you're not alone. From glass skin to double cleansing, K-beauty has gone viral on the social media app for its skin-first approach and innovative products from brands like Glow Recipe, Then I Met You, and Peach & Lily. The latest K-beauty craze taking over is Jell-O skin, a term coined by Korean beauty influencer Ava Lee, and it's all about achieving bouncy, beautiful skin.
Similar to glazed skin, Jell-O skin references a yummy dessert for its texture and appearance. In a TikTok video, Lee shows herself getting a facial and explains that Jell-O skin is "as bouncy and elastic as Jell-O or rice cakes, and every time you move [your skin], it should bounce back immediately.”
Lee explains that the Korean word for the skin-care trend is taeng taeng, but since it has no direct English translation, she came up with the term Jell-O skin. She credits her Jell-O skin to lots of collagen, a protein that improves elasticity and reduces wrinkles for a plump and bouncy complexion. Lee's videos went viral, and the hashtag #jelloskin currently has more than 15 million views on TikTok.
Collagen is found in skin-care products like creams and serums, but Lee calls collagen a “lifestyle” and recommends incorporating the protein into your diet, along with drinking water to stay hydrated and SPF protection. Board certified multi-specialist physician Dr. Azza Halim, MD, agrees, putting an emphasis on internal wellness.
“I give this trend a thumbs-up because it's not only about skin-care or DIY treatments but actually encompasses internal wellness for glowing skin, which has always been my focus for my patients with all their treatments,” she says. “As we age we lose collagen, volume, and elasticity. Yes, we can replenish volume with quality skin-care and professional treatments, but we still need proper nutrition internally to nourish our skin and maintain skin elasticity, hydration, and collagen.”
Dr. Halim recommends taking vitamins A, C, and E and consuming healthy fats to incorporate more collagen into your diet and suggests activating your collagen with PDO threads, a noninvasive face-lift that uses dissolvable sutures, which remain under the skin until they eventually dissolve, and spurs the body to naturally produce more collagen to tighten the skin.
This holistic approach is what differentiates Jell-O skin from glass skin and skin slugging, which are achievable through products. “We also need to incorporate a healthy lifestyle, which includes exercise and sleep in order to increase circulation and nourish our cells. Internal wellness reflects as youthful, plump, elastic, bouncy glowing skin, only achieved by proper diet and lifestyle not by simply applying makeup or skin-care products.”
